Pop Waits at the Neo-Futurists, 2666 at the Goodman: Jonathan talks, Kelly kibbitzes

A one-man piece about music and depression at the Neo-Futurists; a 5-plus hour epic about the 20th Century at the Goodman.  Jonathan holds forth.

Got my dime’s worth with a Chicago Theatre Week $15 ticket. Though the balcony seat forced one to play peek-a-boo over/under the rail and the concessions were “healthy” when I needed a Snickers to get me through the five-hour grind. Breaking it down:
THE PART ABOUT THE ACADEMICS – Thumbs up!
THE PART ABOUT AMALFITANO – Thumbs up!
THE PART ABOUT FATE – Thumbs down!
THE PART ABOUT THE CRIMES – Thumbs down, WAY DOWN!
THE PART ABOUT ARCHIMBOLDI – Thumbs up, BARELY UP!
Thanks, Roger and Gene, wherever you are!

NOTE: I believe Powerball Roy (PoRo) ponied up a million smackers. Shows in the superb production and superb cast that largely makes the play worth a visit. Also PoRo has money in the upcoming Letts play at S-Wolf. Fine, two big theatres. I get it. No problem. But how about a little pocket change for that little Oracle Theatre? Free art for all, PoRo, doesn’t come cheap, and return on investment might top what you get from blue chip theatres. Water a seedling, it grows. Water a tree, your shoe gets wet.
